Dehradun: On the occasion of completion of 10 years of Swachh Bharat Mission, the Government of India has shared the cleanliness stories of 75 cities of the country under the name “Tales from 75 Cities, Journey for Swachhta”, preserving the best efforts made by cities across the country under the Swachh Bharat Mission, out of which 10 stories are from Uttarakhand, which is a big achievement for Uttarakhand and the Urban Development Department.
At the same time, Urban Development Minister Premchand Agarwal has congratulated the department on this achievement. It is also hoped that other municipal bodies will also follow this and make innovative efforts in their municipal bodies and take their municipal bodies and the state to high standards of cleanliness.
Bageshwar Municipality
The women self-help group of Sakhi Area Level Federation in Bageshwar is the first women’s group to focus on cleanliness in the area, in which 45 women do the work of garbage collection and 2 supervisors are employed. They have been dedicated since 2017 to serving places where waste vehicles are unable to reach due to geographical conditions. Their impact has been significant, leading to improved sanitation in 11 wards, increased citizen awareness, revenue growth and sustainable livelihood opportunities for women.
Haldwani Municipal Corporation
The Baini Sena initiative (Kumaoni dialect for “sister”) by Haldwani Municipal Corporation has proved to be a highly successful model for women-led waste management in Uttarakhand, both at the state and national levels.
Rudpur Municipal Corporation
Under Waste to Wonders, Rudrapur Municipal Corporation, in collaboration with the district administration and other partners, has transformed the 30-year-old Paharganj and converted the trenching ground into a beautiful space where tree plantation is ongoing. This innovative effort has reduced environmental pollution in the city. It has also provided relief to the people from traffic.
Joshimath Nagar Palika
Under Waste to Wealth, plastic waste is being sorted into 35 categories at the Material Recovery Center (MRF) established in Nagar Palika Parishad Jyotirmath (Joshimath) and so far the Nagar Palika has earned more than one crore rupees from this. This is helping the Nagar Palika Parishad in the conservation of the environment along with providing a source of income.
Kedarnath Nagar Panchayat
In Waste to Wonders Nagar Panchayat Kedarnath, on one hand, land is being conserved by disposing of plastic waste through a digital refund system through private participation. On the other hand, along with protecting the environment from the damage caused by plastic waste, awareness has increased among the general public. Means of livelihood are also being promoted.
Haridwar Nagar Nigam
The initiative of the first smart public toilet of Uttarakhand was taken by the Haridwar administration and the Haridwar Municipal Corporation, which is an important step in public cleanliness. A new era of public cleanliness has begun. Smart toilets are a product of public private partnership and are a symbol of cooperation between Haridwar Municipal Corporation and the community. Smart toilets not only meet basic sanitation requirements but also emphasize on user comfort and well-being.
Kirti Nagar Nagar Panchayat
The solid waste processing and disposal facility center established in Nagar Panchayat Kirtinagar is operational since January 2023. It is the first solid waste management facility with sanitary landfill in the hilly region of Uttarakhand.
Gangotri Nagar Panchayat
Under Kachre se Kanchan, Nagar Panchayat Gangotri is managing the wet waste generated during the journey and preparing compost. This has ensured cleanliness on one hand and promoted environmental protection.
Naugaon Nagar Panchayat
Under Waste to Wealth, waste management work is going on through Material Recovery Center in Nagar Panchayat Naugaon District Uttarkashi.
Dehradun Municipal Corporation
Self-reliant ward for solid waste management Established in 2019 in Nathuawala ward under Municipal Corporation Dehradun, Sanitation Park of Dehradun is an example of sustainable waste management. It is operated by private participation and this facility works on door-to-door collection model.
