UP: Acting DGP Prashant Kumar Can Eye Additional 18 Months in Office Under Govt’s New Guidelines

Under the Uttar Pradesh government’s new guidelines for selecting the Director General of Police (DGP), IPS Prashant Kumar (1990 batch) may have the opportunity to serve as DGP for an additional two years.

If Officer Kumar, who is currently serving in an acting capacity, gets selected as the permanent DGP, his tenure would extend till November 30th, 2026, instead of retiring on his originally scheduled date of May 31st, 2025—gaining an extra 18 months in office.

Since the formation of the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh, eight individuals have been appointed as DGPs, including four permanent DGPs. Among the permanent appointees are — Mr. O.P. Singh (1983-batch retired IPS officer), who served for two years; Mr. Mukul Goyal (1987-batch retired IPS officer), who was the most recent permanent DGP.
