Yoga Day 2025 was historic for Uttarakhand, notification of Yoga Policy issued, read the objective of the country’s first yoga policy

Dehradun: International Yoga Day is celebrated every year on 21st June, but the International Yoga Day of the year 2025 was very special. Because, this time on the occasion of Yoga Day, the notification of the country’s first yoga policy prepared by the state government has been issued. It was announced at the International Yoga Day program in the summer capital Gairsain.

Uttarakhand is the land of spirituality and yoga

Uttarakhand is considered to be the land of spirituality and yoga tradition of India, which has also been the place of penance of sages, munis and sadhaks for centuries. Due to which Rishikesh of Uttarakhand is considered to be the capital of world yoga. In such a situation, now the state government is moving rapidly towards making Devbhoomi Uttarakhand the global capital of yoga and wellness.

Yoga policy implemented

In this direction, the AYUSH department has prepared a yoga policy, which was approved by the cabinet on 28 May 2025. In such a situation, now on the occasion of International Yoga Day i.e. on 21st June, this yoga policy has been implemented in Uttarakhand. The notification of which was released by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on 21st June i.e. today in the program of International Yoga Day organized in Bhararisain.

After the implementation of AYUSH policy in the year 2023, the AYUSH department started the exercise of preparing a yoga policy in the year 2023 itself. The AYUSH department had prepared the initial draft of the yoga policy and also sent it to the government for training, but due to some deficiencies in the draft, it was sent back by the government. After which the AYUSH department prepared the country’s first yoga policy as per the guidelines of the government.

In preparing this yoga policy, the AYUSH department had taken suggestions from Ayurveda experts as well as all the stakeholders. The yoga policy was prepared by the AYUSH department in about 2 years. Which was placed before the cabinet on 28 May after getting approval from the Legislative Department in May 2025. On which the approval of the Dhami cabinet was received. In such a situation, the notification regarding the implementation of Yoga Policy in the state has been issued on International Yoga Day.

Objective of the country’s first Yoga Policy?

  • Yoga policy will not only promote public health but will also promote tourism in Uttarakhand
  • Yoga Directorate will be established under Yoga policy
  • Rules and guidelines will be made for yoga institutes
  • Uttarakhand will be established as the global capital of yoga and wellness
  • This policy will help in making Uttarakhand a strong and developed state
  • After the implementation of Yoga policy, the spiritual heritage of yoga of the country will be protected
  • Yoga will be integrated in education
  • Development will happen by promoting yoga meditation centers
  • Research in yoga and spirituality will also be encouraged
  • Yoga, spirituality and tourism will also develop in Uttarakhand
  • Yoga instructor centers will be established under Yoga policy
  • Registration of yoga trained and yoga related infrastructure will be developed
  • All facilities will be made available to promote yoga under Uttarakhand Yoga policy
  • Yoga courses will be started in schools
  • Live yoga will be done for general public, school children and colleges Broadcast
  • Yoga policy will benefit 13 thousand people of the state as yoga trainers, yoga instructors
  • Yoga sessions will be conducted in hotels, resorts, homestays, schools, colleges and corporate sectors

‘Yoga Directorate’ will be created: After the implementation of Yoga Policy 2025 in Uttarakhand, ‘Yoga Directorate’ will be created to operate the yoga policy, make rules and implement it, give grants and monitor all departmental activities. Many important provisions have been made in the yoga policy. Under which yoga instructors’ cadets will be established.

Registration of yoga trained and yoga related infrastructure will be developed. Not only this, all facilities will be provided to promote yoga under the yoga policy. In which capital grants will be given to yoga and knowledge centers. Grants will be arranged for yoga research.

Along with promoting yoga in the resources available in the state, startups will be encouraged. Apart from this, capacity building will be done in the field of yoga in collaboration with national and international institutions. Also, the establishment of world-class yoga centers will be encouraged.

Goals set under the Yoga Policy

  • Five new yoga hubs will be established in Uttarakhand by the year 2030
  • Jageshwar, Mukteshwar, Vyas Valley, Tehri Lake and Kolidhek Lake will be developed as yoga hubs
  • Yoga services will be made available in all AYUSH health and wellness centers of the state by March 2026
  • Community based mindfulness program will be started
  • The program will be started keeping in mind the needs of different age groups, genders and classes
  • Registration of all yoga institutions of the state will be done
  • A special online yoga platform will be started
  • A promotional campaign will be run to promote yoga tourism
  • International yoga conferences will be organized
  • The target is to develop partnerships with 15 to 20 national and international institutions by March 2028

Under the Uttarakhand Yoga Policy 2025, the government has also set several goals. Under this, at least five new yoga hubs will be established in Uttarakhand by the year 2030. These include Jageshwar, Mukteshwar, Vyas Valley, Tehri Lake and Kolidhek Lake. Along with this, by March 2026, yoga will be established in all AYUSH health and wellness centers of the state.
