Washington: US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order, in which an additional 25 percent tariff has been imposed on India in response to the continuous purchase of Russian oil. With this, the tariff on goods imported from India has now increased to 50 percent.
This tariff will be implemented in two phases. In the first phase, 25 percent tariff will be applicable on goods imported from India from August 7, while the additional tariff will be applicable from August 27. He has taken this step a day after warning of imposing heavy tariff on India on Tuesday. Trump says that changes are possible in this according to the reaction of any country.
He said, “I have received additional information from various senior officials about, among other things, the actions of the Russian Federation government with respect to the situation in Ukraine. After considering this additional information, I find that the national emergency described in Executive Order 14066 continues and that the actions and policies of the Russian Federation government continue to pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States.” ‘Imposition of additional tariffs is necessary’
To deal with the national emergency described in Executive Order 14066, I determine that it is necessary and appropriate to impose additional tariffs on imports of oil by India, which is directly or indirectly importing oil from the Russian Federation. In my opinion, imposing the tariffs described below, in addition to continuing other measures taken to deal with the national emergency described in Executive Order 14066, will more effectively deal with the national emergency described in Executive Order 14066. Let us tell you that Trump had said on Tuesday that India is no longer a good trade partner and that he will increase heavy tariffs on goods imported from India in 24 hours from the current rate of 25 percent in view of the continued purchase of Russian oil.
In accordance with applicable law, an additional 25 percent tariff will be applicable on goods from India imported into the customs territory of the United States. Subject to Section 3 of this order, this duty rate will apply to goods that will enter the warehouse for consumption or will be removed from the warehouse for consumption 21 days after the date of this order,
However, the order will not apply to things that were loaded on any ship present at the port for entry into the United States before 12.01 am 21 days later and enter for consumption or will be removed from the warehouse for consumption before 12.01 am on September 17, 2025.
Priyanka Chaturvedi targeted
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP has reacted after the announcement of additional tariff. He said, “25 per cent more than the earlier 25 per cent. Is India now the country with the highest tariff in the world? Maybe India’s trade minister should tell us.
Shashi Tharoor expressed concern
Meanwhile, Congress Lok Sabha MP Shashi Tharoor expressed concern over the decision to impose an additional 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods due to the purchase of Russian oil and called it a serious blow to India’s exports. He said, “This will take our total tariff to 50 per cent and it will make it difficult for many people in America to buy our goods.”
‘Why are all the ministers silent?’
In this regard, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aditya Thackeray said, “… Why is no minister answering this?… Why are all the ministers silent? Is there a trade agreement with the United States or not? … ”
India targeted America
Earlier this week, Trump had warned of increasing tariffs on New Delhi. After this, the Indian government reacted strongly. The Ministry of External Affairs, in its statement, accused the US and the European Union of targeting New Delhi. The Ministry of External Affairs, citing trade relations between the US and the European Union, termed Trump’s threats to India as inappropriate.
