Dehradun: A two-day special session of the Uttarakhand Assembly commenced today to commemorate the silver jubilee of the state’s establishment. President Draupadi Murmu attended the special session as the chief guest and addressed the Uttarakhand Assembly. This was the second time in Uttarakhand’s history that the President of the country addressed the Assembly. Previously, in 2015, then-President Pranab Mukherjee had addressed the Uttarakhand Assembly.
The opposition launched a scathing attack on the government: Throughout Monday’s assembly session, discussions focused on the state’s 25 years of development. After the lunch break, the discussion commenced at 4:00 pm. Leader of the Opposition Yashpal Arya was the first to speak. During the session, Yashpal raised the issue of the disasters of this monsoon season. Arya stated that there was an atmosphere of mourning in the homes of those affected, and that the foundation day should be celebrated with simplicity.
The opposition raised burning issues: It was a time of mourning in the state, yet comedy shows were being held. The state government was paying comedians, which was nothing short of a joke. The government should have understood the suffering of those people. The Leader of the Opposition also raised the issue of the promotion of alcohol in Rishikesh. Following this, several members from both the ruling and opposition parties spoke on Uttarakhand’s development journey. During this time, several opposition MLAs expressed their views on burning issues, on which the government appeared to be on the back foot.
CM Dhami calls the special session historic: Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami arrived at the Assembly around 6:30 pm. Speaking to the media, he said that it is a matter of pride for the entire state that the President has come to participate in the special session of the Assembly. The President’s remarks about Uttarakhand’s 25-year journey reflect the struggle Uttarakhand has endured.
Promise of enacting a Uniform Civil Code fulfilled: Chief Minister Pushkar Dhami, regarding the President’s congratulations to the government and praise for the members of the Assembly for enacting the Uniform Civil Code, said that before the 2022 Assembly elections, the BJP government had promised the people of Uttarakhand that the Uniform Civil Code would be the first law enacted after forming the government. The people gave their blessings, and the state government enacted the Uniform Civil Code, which is now in effect in the state.
