Dehradun: President Draupadi Murmu, who arrived in Uttarakhand on a three-day visit, attended several events in Haridwar and Dehradun on November 2nd. On the second day of her visit, November 3rd, at around 11 a.m., she arrived at the Uttarakhand Assembly to address a special session of the Assembly. She addressed the House, delivering several important remarks. Reaching the “temple” of democracy, she congratulated the people of the state, current and former MLAs, on this 25-year journey of accomplishments.
President Murmu said that Uttarakhand was established in 2000 under the leadership of then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, in accordance with the aspirations of the people. Since then, the state has made significant progress in areas such as environment, energy, tourism, education, and health. She added that the state has experienced rapid development in digital and physical connectivity, which has also improved human development indicators. During her nearly 30-minute speech, women were the most frequently mentioned.
Women Empowerment Called Uttarakhand a Strength: President Murmu expressed her delight that Uttarakhand is making steady progress in the field of women’s education and empowerment. She noted that exceptional women like Sushila Baluni, Bachendri Pal, Gaura Devi, Radha Bhatt, and Vandana Kataria have brought glory to the state. She said that the glorious legacy of these women will inspire generations to come. The President also noted that the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly has honored the state by electing Ritu Khanduri Bhushan as its first woman Speaker. She expressed hope that women’s participation in the Legislative Assembly will further increase in the coming years.
Paying Homage to the Land of Valor and Spirituality: The President said that this sacred land of Uttarakhand has been steeped in the traditions of spirituality and bravery for centuries. The youth here are always enthusiastic about serving the nation by joining the army. Citing the examples of the Kumaon and Garhwal Regiments, she said that this state is a matter of pride for the entire nation.
Praising the decision to implement the Uniform Civil Code: President Murmu said that the passage of the Uniform Civil Code Bill in Uttarakhand is a historic step, in accordance with the policy guidelines of the Constitution’s founding fathers. She also commended the State Assembly for passing bills related to transparency and public interest, such as the Lokayukta, land reforms, and anti-copying.
Inspired MLAs: The President urged MLAs to pursue development and public welfare with full dedication. He said that the bond of trust between the public and their representatives remains strong only when they work with a spirit of service. He also appealed for creating opportunities for youth and paying special attention to the development of underprivileged sections. He said, “I hope all MLAs will serve the public with this in mind.”
Increased transparency through the e-Vidhan system: The President praised the launch of the National Electronic Vidhan Application system in the Uttarakhand Assembly.
