SIR begins today in 12 states. What will be the schedule and when will the final voter list be released? 5-point update

New Delhi: The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) is set to begin today in 12 states across the country, in which approximately 51 crore voters will participate. The Election Commission’s objective behind conducting the SIR is to update the voter list and include the names of eligible voters. SIR will ensure that no names are omitted or repeated. The last voter list update took place between 2002 and 2024, but now SIR will be conducted to identify illegal immigrants and remove them from the voter list, while adding the names of eligible voters.

SIR will be conducted in these 12 states

It should be noted that Chief Election Commissioner of the Election Commission of India (ECI), Gyanesh Kumar, announced the nationwide SIR on October 27, 2025. The process will run from November 4 to December 4. The draft voter list will be released on December 9th, and the final voter list will be published on February 7th, 2026. SIR will be conducted in nine states: Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Bengal, and three union territories: Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, and Puducherry. Assembly elections are scheduled for Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, and West Bengal in 2026, while SIR will be conducted later in Assam.

This is how the entire SIR process will proceed:

The SIR process will begin on November 4th, 2025, and will be completed by February 7th, 2026. In the first phase, from October 28th to November 3rd, Booth Level Officers (BLOs) and Returning Officers (ROs) from all 12 states were trained and the necessary materials for conducting SIR were distributed. From November 4th to December 4th, BLOs will go door-to-door to verify the existing voter list. New voters will be added and fake voters will be removed. The draft voter list will be released on December 9th, allowing people to express their objections and claims. Applications can be made to add or remove names. After completing all procedures, the final voter list will be available on February 7th.
