Aadhaar requirement for live-in registration under the UCC abolished; Dhami government amends rules, now passport and voter ID card

Dehradun: After implementing the Uniform Civil Code, the Dhami government in Uttarakhand has made several amendments to it. Two months ago, the state government received information that people living in live-in relationships might face difficulties in registering. Following this, the decision was brought to the cabinet and amended. Now, the Aadhaar card requirement for live-in registration under the Uniform Civil Code has been completely removed.

The Dhami government had previously enacted strict rules regarding identity cards, clearly stating that Aadhaar card registration would be mandatory for live-in relationships. This requirement has now been removed. Instead, registration can be done using a passport, voter ID card, ration card, PAN card, or driving license. It is reported that several more changes are being made to the online website during registration. This is the state government’s fourth amendment to this registration process. Previously, various amendments have been made to the Uniform Civil Code.

Even two months ago, people from outside, such as Bhutan, Nepal, or other states or countries, were living here. They were facing the problem of not being able to register due to lack of Aadhaar card. Therefore, by removing this requirement, the Dhami government has made registration even easier.

Home Secretary Shailesh Bagauli believes that if some amendments are being made to the Uniform Civil Code, then it is not only beneficial for the people but also very important for the state. He said that within 30 days, the Registrar General Officer will verify the registration. Only after that will the registration be certified. It is worth noting that the number of live-in relationship registrations in Uttarakhand has reached 60 so far.
