New Delhi: In a surprising development, Manoj Soni, Chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), has tendered his resignation nearly five years ahead of schedule, citing personal reasons. Mr Soni, who assumed office on May 16, 2023, was expected to serve until 2029 but chose to step down from his post, leaving the country’s premier recruitment body without leadership amid speculation and uncertainty.
Sources close to the matter revealed that Soni submitted his resignation to the President of India approximately a month ago. However, the acceptance of his resignation remains pending, with no official clarity on whether the government will endorse his departure.
Soni’s decision to resign reportedly has no connection to recent controversies surrounding alleged use of fake certificates by UPSC candidates to secure government positions. Despite his resignation, the former Chairman has not publicly commented on the reasons behind his early departure.
Prior to his tenure at UPSC, Soni held significant academic roles in Gujarat, serving as Vice-Chancellor at two universities. Notably, he was appointed Vice-Chancellor of Maharaja Sayajirao University (MSU), Vadodara, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2005, making him the youngest person to hold such a position at the age of 40. He also served two terms as Vice-Chancellor of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Open University (BAOU) until 2015.
The UPSC, a constitutional body mandated by Articles 315-323 Part XIV Chapter II of the Indian Constitution, is responsible for conducting examinations and recruiting personnel for various civil services in India. Under Soni’s leadership, the commission included distinguished members such as Dinesh Dasa, BB Swain, Sheel Vardhan Singh, Sanjay Verma, and Preeti Sudan.
The sudden vacancy in the UPSC Chairman’s role has prompted discussions within government circles about a suitable replacement. However, as of now, there has been no announcement regarding Soni’s successor, leaving the commission’s future leadership uncertain.
Observers note that Soni’s close association with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who previously appointed him to key academic positions, adds a layer of intrigue to his departure from UPSC.
