Dehradun: The state’s first sports university ordinance has got the approval of the Dhami cabinet. The bill was earlier returned from the Raj Bhavan without approval. Sports Minister Rekha Arya has expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and the cabinet for this after the cabinet meeting. He expressed hope that it will soon get approval from the Raj Bhavan as well.
The government introduced the State Sports University Bill on the second day of the monsoon session of the Assembly in August 2024. It was sent to the Raj Bhavan for approval. The bill said that the governor will be the chancellor of the university. At the same time, the government will give a corpus fund of 10 crores for the university.
The proposal to confer any honorary degree or other distinctions will be made only after the approval of the chancellor, while the vice-chancellor will be a full-time salaried officer of the university. At that time, the four nominated members by the governor in the university’s working council were not mentioned. The qualification for the appointment of the vice-chancellor was also not completely clear.
When ‘other’ was written regarding the qualification, the bill was returned without approval. According to Sports Minister Rekha Arya, after settling the objections, its ordinance got the cabinet’s approval. The minister said that the sports university is one of the ambitious projects of the state.
