Dhami government provides major relief to vehicle owners, decides on fitness fee rates

Dehradun: The state government has provided significant relief to vehicle owners in Uttarakhand by deciding to keep the fitness fees for commercial vehicles older than 15 years unchanged. Following the instructions of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, the Transport Department has postponed the fitness fee hike until November 21, 2026. Transport Department Secretary Brijesh Sant has issued a notification in this regard.

According to the order issued by the Transport Department, the Governor, under the powers conferred by Rule 81 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, read with clause (h) of subsection (2) of Section 65 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, has suspended the revision of fitness test fee rates for vehicles older than 15 years, made by the Government of India through Rule 11A, with immediate effect, for the next one year, i.e., until November 21, 2026. During this period, the fitness fee rates will continue as they were before the revision by the Government of India, but these rates will be payable as per the revision by the Government of India after the next one year.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami stated that the central government recently increased the fitness fees for commercial vehicles older than 15 years by up to 10 times. Considering the public sentiment in the state, the state government has decided not to impose this immediate burden on vehicle owners in Uttarakhand. The CM stated that the Uttarakhand government, keeping the interests of the public paramount, is taking decisions that do not impose unnecessary financial burden on the public. He added that the state government will always work in accordance with the expectations of the public.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami stated that our government’s commitment is to provide relief to the public and take prompt decisions in the public interest. In light of the recent increase in fitness fees for commercial vehicles by the central government, we have postponed it for one year in Uttarakhand. During this period, the previously determined fees will remain in effect. We don’t want vehicle owners and those involved in the transportation business in the state to face a sudden additional financial burden. New rates will be implemented in the state based on future revisions by the central government.

CM Dhami said, “Our government is sensitive to the public. Protecting the interests of the poor, the middle class, and thousands of people involved in the taxi and transport businesses is our priority. We will not allow any delay in making decisions that benefit the public.”
