Dwaraka Tirumala Rao is the new DGP of AP

VIJAYWADA: The state govt on Wednesday appointed Ch Dwaraka Tirumala Rao as Director General of Police (DGP). Rao is currently holding the position of commissioner Public Transport Department (PTD) and ex officio Vice Chairman and Managing Director (VC&MD) of Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC).

Rao, a 1989 batch IPS officer had worked in different positions as Additional Director General (ADG) of Crime Investigation Department (CID) during earlier TDP regime.

Do you think opposition’s demand for SC-appointed probe into allegations of irregularities in NEET-UG 2024 exams justified?

He also worked as commissioner of police, Vijayawada before getting promoted as DGP and subsequently posted as commissioner of PTD and ex officio VC &MD of APSRTC.

Despite being the senior among the DG rank officers working in the state, the YSRC govt has appointed K Rajendranath Reddy as DGP.

Reddy was transferred by the Election Commission (EC) following several complaints of favouritism towards YSRCP. EC has appointed Harish Kumar Gupta who is also junior to Rao.

However, chief minister Naidu preferred seniority of Rao and appointed him as DGP. Interestingly, Rao appointed as DGP coordination in the office of DGP, Head of Police Forces (HoPF) and appointed him as DGP (HoPG) in Full Additional Charge (FAC) untill further orders.
