Dehradun: The Uttarakhand high court (HC) bench of chief Justice Ritu Bahri and Justice Rakesh Thapliyal, while deliberating on a PIL on the abolition of the revenue police system, instructed the state govt to institute a regular police system across the state within a year and furnish a report.
During the hearing, the state govt affirmed that it has already established a regular police system in various regions and is endeavouring to implement it in other areas.
The HC had issued multiple directives to the govt in 2018 in this regard, but it failed to adhere to those orders. Notably, in 2004, the Supreme Court had acknowledged the necessity to terminate this system observing that revenue police lack the training of civil police and essential amenities such as modern equipment, computers, DNA and blood testing, forensic investigation and fingerprinting, which impedes investigation in criminal cases.
