Idashisha Nongrang, a seasoned Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from the 1992 batch, has been appointed as the acting Director General of Police (DGP) for Meghalaya. Currently serving as the Special DG of Meghalaya police, Mr. Nongrang steps into this role until a permanent DGP is appointed, as per an official notification released by the government.
The decision follows the impending retirement of the incumbent DGP, Lajja Ram Bishnoi, on May 19, 2024, upon completing his two-year term. Despite the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) previously recommending three candidates for the DGP post, the ongoing model code of conduct for the Lok Sabha elections hinders the selection process for a permanent replacement.
Mr. Nongrang’s appointment as acting DGP underscores his extensive experience and expertise in law enforcement, offering stability and leadership during this transitional period for Meghalaya Police. With his appointment, Mr. Nongrang is poised to lead the force effectively until a permanent successor is appointed.
