Dehradun: The path has been cleared for the establishment of an Integrated Check Post in Banbasa, Champawat district of Uttarakhand, on the India-Nepal border. For this purpose, the Central Government has finalized a proposal to allocate 34 hectares of forest land in Banbasa to the Land Port Authority.
The construction of this check post will help increase trade with neighboring Nepal. It will also play a vital role in facilitating border movement and strengthening security. An integrated office for the police, ITBP, CBI, and other security agencies will also be established there.
The central government is currently developing land ports near international borders for trade, transportation, and border security. In this regard, a decision has been made to build an integrated checkpoint at Banbasa in Champawat on the India-Nepal border.
The Land Port Authority had previously identified land at Zero Point for this purpose. The land acquisition process was initiated, but the large area of forest land within its jurisdiction posed a problem. Some trees were also to be felled. However, land was identified for new plantations instead.
This issue also came up in a meeting of the high-powered committee of the regional office of the Union Ministry of Forest, Environment, and Climate Change. The committee previously granted permission for the first phase of work and also gave in-principle approval to transfer 34 hectares of reserved forest land to the Land Port Authority. Now, the ministry has finalized this proposal.
