Pramod Kumar, a 1989 batch IPS officer, will be included in a panel for promotion to the rank of director general of police (DGP), as per an order issued by Home Secretary Dheeraj Kumar. This follows the Madras high court’s recent decision to discharge him from a 2012 scam.

His name came under scrutiny after the Tirupur police uncovered the Paazee Forex scam, a multi-crore rupee fraud reported in Sept 2009. The company’s directors were arrested for cheating depositors. Kumar was suspended in 2012 for his alleged connection to the scam but was reinstated six years later.
A native of Bihar, Pramod Kumar contested the departmental disciplinary proceedings at the Central Administrative Tribunal in New Delhi. The principal bench quashed the charge memorandum on Feb 20 this year.

Madras High Court discharged Kumar from all charges brought by the CBI, which were pending before the additional district judge for CBI cases in Coimbatore. Subsequently, the screening committee deemed him ‘fit for promotion’. Based on the committee’s recommendations, the state home department has decided to include Kumar’s name in the promotion panel.
