Justice BR Gavai was sworn in as the 52nd Chief Justice of India (CJI) at a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Wednesday. He was administered the oath of office by President Droupadi Murmu.
About Justice BR Gavai
Justice Gavai, who hails from a non-legal background, has made history as the first Buddhist to be appointed CJI. Son of the late Ramakrishna Suryabhan Gavai — a prominent Ambedkarite leader and founder of the Republican Party of India — Justice Gavai’s journey to the country’s top judicial post is marked by resilience and distinction. His father, fondly known as Dadasaheb, served as a Lok Sabha MP from Amravati and as Governor of Bihar, Sikkim, and Kerala during the UPA era (2006–2011).
His Journey becoming a judge
In Novermber 14, 2003 , he was appointed Additional Judge Bombay High Court.
On November 12, 2005 , he was made Permanent Judge at Bombay High Court.
On May 24, 2019, He was made Judge at Supreme Court of India.
In his new role, Justice Gavai has pledged to uphold the Constitution and ensure the faithful discharge of his duties. He will continue to share the bench with Justice Augustine George Masih during his tenure.
