Nitish Kumar resigns as Bihar CM, PM Modi congratulates him ahead of swearing in ceremony

Patna: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar reached the Raj Bhavan and tendered his resignation to Governor Rajendra Arlekar on Sunday morning, January 28. The JD(U) chief shall exit the 28-party Opposition bloc and then form a coalition with the BJP, reports say.

“We have decided to sever ties with the mahagathbandhan in the state,” he told the Governor, news agency ANI reported.

Sources told News18, Prime Minister Narendra Modi dialled the JD(U) Chief before he left for Raj Bhavan and congratulated him. Following Nitish Kumar’s resignation, BJP shall submit its ‘Letter of Support’ to JDU and CM Nitish Kumar by 12 pm, before the oath-taking ceremony at 4 pm, according to the News18 report.

Nitish Kumar is likely to be sworn in as the Chief Minister at 4 pm in the presence of BJP national chief JP Nadda.

Earlier in the day, a key BJP meeting was underway. Also, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MLAs have been directed to stay united and not to speak against CM Nitish Kumar, sources told News18.
