Raj Bhavans renamed after Governor’s approval; Dehradun and Nainital will now be known as Lok Bhavans

Dehradun: The Raj Bhavans in Dehradun and Nainital, Uttarakhand, will now be known as Lok Bhavans. The notification for the name change was issued on Monday. This change had been under development for the past few days.

Following approval from the Home Ministry, the Dehradun and Nainital Raj Bhavans were officially renamed as Lok Bhavans in a notification issued by Secretary to the Governor, Ravinath Raman, on Monday. This notification came into effect immediately.

The term Raj Bhavan dates back to British rule, when the grand official residences of the Governor or Lieutenant Governor were called Government Houses. After India’s independence, these former Government Houses were converted into the official residences of the Governors. To reflect the influence of the British Raj, they were renamed Raj Bhavan (State House), a term that remains in use today.
