Dehradun: To connect youth with jobs of their choice, promote job creation, and develop plans tailored to youth needs, the government is conducting the Skill Census for the first time in Uttarakhand. The Skill Development Committee has begun preparations for this.
Amid the growing need for employment and self-employment in the state, the government now wants to conduct the Skill Census to assess the skills required and the skills that workers are most interested in. So far, pilot projects for the Skill Census have been conducted in Mangalagiri Assembly and Thullur Mandal in Andhra Pradesh.
Uttarakhand will be the second state to conduct such a census. Pankaj Kumar, nodal officer for the Skill Census, stated that the government has granted permission. A consultancy is currently being selected to prepare the DPR. Only after this will the outline be clear.
How the Census Will Be Conducted
Information will be collected about the education and skills of youth. Information will also be gathered from industries about their skill requirements. Based on the information, individuals will be provided with a “Skill ID” that reflects their skills.
The government will use this information to fill skill gaps and train people for employment. Whether data collection for this census will be online or offline is yet to be decided.

A comprehensive assessment of existing skills in the state will be conducted. This will identify gaps between industry needs and people’s skills. Training programs will be designed based on the collected data. People will be trained for the right jobs, increasing employment opportunities. Accurate data will allow the government to formulate policies and make changes to the education system accordingly.
A Census of the 15-59 Age Group in Andhra Pradesh
The Skill Census has begun in Andhra Pradesh. Infosys is working on this project in one assembly constituency and one district. This project will be conducted in two phases: the first phase will assess companies’ skill needs, and the second phase will collect information on the skills and education of people aged 15-59.
