New Delhi: In a landmark decision on July 11, 2025, the Modi government appointed Sonali Mishra (IPS:1993:MP) as the new Director General (DG) of the Railway Protection Force (RPF), Railway Board. This appointment makes her the first woman to ever lead the RPF, a pivotal force responsible for security across India’s vast railway network.
Transition of Command
Sonali Mishra will take charge from the current DG, Manoj Yadava (IPS:1988:HY), who is due to retire on July 31, 2025. Mishra’s tenure is set to continue until her superannuation on October 31, 2026. The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) has confirmed her appointment, which is approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, at Level 16 in the pay matrix, effective from the date she assumes office or until further instructions.
Distinguished Career
Mishra brings over 30 years of experience in law enforcement. Presently, she serves as Special Director General of the Madhya Pradesh Police. Her career features key leadership roles, including a significant tenure as Additional Director General in the Border Security Force (BSF). Her extensive service record across both state and central agencies highlights her expertise in security and administrative leadership.
About the Outgoing DG
Manoj Yadava has been serving as DG of RPF since August 1, 2023, taking over after the retirement of Sanjay Chander (IPS:1987:WB). Yadava will retire on July 31, 2025, paving the way for Sonali Mishra’s historic appointment.
