Following a directive from the Punjab and Haryana High Court in February, the government of Punjab recently reinstated IPS officer Mr. Paramraj Singh Umranangal, who remained suspended for the past five years for his alleged involvement in police firing during protests over the desecration of the Guru Granth Sahib in 2015.
Officer Umranangal, a 1995-batch IPS officer, was posted in the rank of Inspector General of Police (IGP) before getting suspended in 2019 and getting named an accused in multiple police firing cases linked to desecration incidents in Faridkot in 2015, which led to protests resulting in two deaths and several injuries.
